Title Screen (concept art)
This was created for a very early build of the mobile game, Epic Empire: A Hero’s Quest, for Pocketgems. The characters in the game looked a lot different in the early stages. Below it I included some of the roughs.
Game Narrator (Character design)
I did some character designs early on in the game for a narrator character. Many were created by various artists. This was one I worked on.
Avatar Armor designs
I collaborated with other artists and engineers to help create a robust avatar system where detailed and layered armor art would fit on our characters as they fight and move in the environment. I was responsible for how the armor was initially rendered (in vector). I painted detailed colored concept art of many of the armor designs, sent them to the venders and was quality control on the delivery of the final vector art.
App icon art
Some various App icon artwork for the game. The approved version on the right was used in the early builds of the game.
Game building designs
Early in the game development I took some early concept sketches from another artist and recreated then in vector. This was really helpful to gage the size and scale for the various types of structures in the game. My art went into the early builds of the game but the final versions of all the structures were rendered in 3D.
Title Screen Art
I was tasked with finishing and polishing this Title Screen. Another artist created the Logo and the female character, and I painted the background and the male character.
Character Design and Animation
I designed, updated, and animated various characters from the game. Some of these walked around the environments, some had simple stationary movements.
Game Merchants design
This game featured hundreds of merchants the player would buy and use to mine currency for the game. Before we outsourced most of the art, I rendered some initial designs to get feel for animation length and style. I was able to use that to create the style guides for the many other art studios around the world that would end up working on this game. I worked with the venders, giving feedback on the art and making sure all the hundreds of layers were formatted correctly for engineering.
Ship Design and Animations
I designed and animated many of the initial ships for this game. Each ship had a front and back view, and came in 3 sizes (small, medium and large). Each also had its own animated character. All rendered in vector style. These were a lot of fun to design.
Environmental assets and Special Places
The game featured a lot of environmental elements for the player to chop down or explore. These are some of the rendered elements I made.
Environmental Art
Some of these are concept art, and some made it in the game.
Background Art
I created some static and animated backgrounds that were sold on the Pogo Mini Mall at Pogo.com. The animated versions cost more. All backgrounds were displayed at 150x220. The mini covered the center of the background so we’d highlight some elements on the sides.
Warrior
Was going for a old Sci-Fi Book cover with this one.
Fish Gordon
This turned out looking like a Poster for an animated movie.
Random Sketches
A lot of the doodles and stuff I draw for myself are weird monsters and things like that. Or I do thumbnails and storyboards to try to visualize a story or scene in my head.
Snake Guard
This is one of a series of Tribal Reptilians I was designing.
Monster Sketch
More creepy sketches. Frustrated with the Covid lockdowns, I did a few storyboards for a an animated short about a Covid monster.
Numbers Game
An animated short I’ve been working on (and off). It all takes place in one bar with a main character trying to navigate the dating scene. Using Adobe Animate I tried to capture that Noir type of lighting.
This 3min vimeo clip features a fraction of some of the animation and background artwork I’ve done in the last 15 years, from mobile and web games to animated shorts. Most of these were created using Adobe Animate.
Background and UI Art
Mobius Arena was a browser based Card game by company called Superdudes.net.
I created the animated Arena Backgrounds. I also created the UI art style. I don’t normally work on UI, but for this game they wanted a less graphic look and a more physical robotic elements that would interact with the backgrounds or hold the playing cards during the battles. All the art was created in Adobe Animate.
The playing card Art (like in the Body Arena screen) was created by other artists.
Storyboard Art
I storyboarded hundreds of animated shorts for Pogo.com. These animated shorts were awarded to players as “Badges”. Some were individual Badges but most came in collections of 11.
I came up with the story and produced the storyboards. Although I animated a few of these badges myself, there were so many we had the art team at EA Pogo Shanghai, China animate them. I would then have them do revisions, or add some of my own polish if needed.
The badges would feature a theme (like Thanksgiving) and elements or characters from the game. I would create a story that would encompass it all, and try to keep it under 1 Minute.
Here are 3 examples of some storyboards I made for the animators at Pogo Shanghai, and a link to the finished animation on Vimeo.
The Sopranos: Bada Bing Manager
This was a re-skin of another game Digital Chocolate had made. I painted some new characters using the pixel brush setting. I animated them and my new sprites replaced the old ones. I also created the title screen for the game.
Avapeeps: Flirt Nation
Worked with an engineer to produce an Avatar system for this very ambitious pre iPhone dating game. We were able to get some nice details considering the size limitations. I designed the characters and clothing. Everything was done in grey scale. I also worked on animated title screens for it and the UI. I learned a lot creating the Avatar and clothing. The knowledge came in handy years later.
Club K-os
We did a game for a Canadian hip hop musician known as K-os. This was another re-skin where I pixel painted over the old characters and created a new Title Screen and Logo.
Spongebob’s: Dreams of Atlantis
A rough Title Screen I created at the early stages of this game development. This one was not used in the final release.
Various re-skins of mobile games.
I was tasked with re-painting over various sports game characters, and replacing them with women in bikinis. I also creating the new Title screens.
Title Screens from various Re-Skinned Games.
Background Art
Here are some backgrounds I made for an animated short created by Mike Judge for the TV performer known as Bobby Badfingers. (Americas got Talent).
The background art consisted of various angles of an urban basketball court.
The character designs and animation were done by Mike Judge.
